Is the CISI GSO Exam Difficult? Pass Rate & What to Expect in 2026
With a pass rate of around 60%, the CISI GSO exam is one of the more achievable CISI units — but four in ten candidates still fail. Here is an honest look at why, and how to make sure you pass.

If you are about to sit the CISI Global Securities Operations (GSO) exam, you have probably heard it is one of the more manageable CISI units. That is true — but "manageable" is not the same as "easy," and plenty of candidates still fall short.
Let us be honest about the numbers, look at why candidates struggle, and how you can make sure you are on the right side of the pass rate.
⚠️ The Reality Check
- Pass rate: ~60% — more achievable than most CISI exams
- But: around 4 in 10 candidates still fail
- Passing score: 70% (35 out of 50)
- Margin for error: you can get only 15 questions wrong
- Style: technical, terminology-heavy operations content
How Hard Is the CISI GSO Exam, Really?
The current pass rate is around 60%. Compared with tougher CISI exams — where pass rates sit in the 35–45% range — GSO is genuinely more achievable. It is not designed to catch you out with trick questions.
But do not get complacent. The exam still demands 70% to pass, and the content is a dense mix of operations terminology: custody, settlement, corporate actions, securities financing, taxation and risk. Candidates who assume the good pass rate means they can skim the workbook are exactly the ones who make up the 40% who fail.
Why Do Candidates Fail?
1. The Terminology Is Dense
GSO is packed with precise operations terms — DvP, buy-ins, cum/ex dates, immobilised vs dematerialised securities, ICSDs and CSDs, manufactured dividends, CSDR, FATCA, CRS. Mixing up similar-sounding terms is a common way to lose easy marks.
2. It Is Broad for a 50-Question Exam
Five chapters span the entire securities-operations lifecycle. That is a lot of ground, and the detail matters — the exam frequently tests the specific characteristics of a process, not just the headline concept.
3. The 70% Pass Mark Leaves Little Room
You can get only 15 of 50 questions wrong. A few careless errors on terminology, plus a missed calculation or two, and the margin disappears faster than candidates expect.
4. It Rewards Practice, Not Just Reading
Many candidates read the workbook, feel comfortable with the concepts, and then discover on exam day that recognising a term is not the same as answering a precise question about it under time pressure.

ExamPrep.ae's instant feedback and explanations help you understand each concept and improve your score.

ExamPrep.ae's performance-by-chapter analytics show exactly which GSO chapters are dragging your score down.
Which Chapters Deserve the Most Attention?
The question weighting makes your priorities clear:
- Chapter 3 – Other Investor Services (16 questions): The heaviest chapter — safekeeping, corporate actions, cash management and securities financing. This is where most marks live, and it carries the custody-fee and corporate-action calculations.
- Chapter 1 – Main Industry Participants (13 questions): A large chapter with a lot of participant roles and custody concepts to keep straight.
- Chapter 2 – Settlement Characteristics (11 questions): Detailed settlement mechanics, payment systems and failed-settlement rules, including ICMA interest claims.
Together, Chapters 1, 2 and 3 make up 40 of the 50 questions. Nail these and you are most of the way to a comfortable pass. The full weighting is in our GSO exam format guide.

ExamPrep.ae's Practice by Chapter mode lets you drill each of the 5 GSO chapters individually.

ExamPrep.ae breaks down every calculation step by step, so the maths is never the reason you fail.
